Delhi has always been known for crush of mechanical and human traffic, but now things have changed with Delhi Metro Rail Service operating at a full swing to every corner of New Delhi and Old Delhi. It has brought a pleasant smile to Delhites and also to the tourists who now saves lots of time and money in transportation within the city.

The Delhi Metro was started on 24th December 2002. It has became the second underground rapid transit system in India, after Kolkata. Delhi Metro has a combination of elevated, at-grade and underground lines.

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is the man who gave Delhi, the capital city of the country its first Metro. He was entrusted with the work of setting up Delhi Metro. He is an engineer by profession and following the success of Delhi Metro, he is one of the top 50 powerful men in India.

Delhi_Metro Metro rail service in Delhi has come as a much awaited gift for the people of Delhi, which has indeed changed the transport facility of the city. It has become the "life line" of Delhi as people are dependent on Delhi Metro for commuting to different places within the city and to nearby regions in the National Capital Region. Delhi Metro Project has been recognized all over the world for its specialty in terms of a hi-tech rail and better equipped transport system. The project is under the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and it deserves all the credit for transforming the transport service of the city.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established by the Government of India and the Government of Delhi in March 1995 to build a new metro system in the capital. In February 2009, the Delhi Metro project became the first railway project in the world to be registered for carbon credits by the United Nations.

With the advent of Delhi Metro, the transport and communication system has received a boost. The city is better connected and people have become dependent on the same to commute to different parts of the city. The project that was undertaken by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation or DMRC has been highly appreciated and has enhanced the transport system of the city.

Metro rail in the city has reduced the traffic to some extent and the pollution level has certainly declined. Construction of Metro is still in progress in other parts of the city as the network of Delhi Metro is expected to cover whole of Delhi by the year 2012. Delhi Metro is equipped with modern facilities and the state of art design makes it very different from other metro rails in the world. Security within the metro rail has been given prime importance. The train ensures the safety and comfort of passengers with hi-tech compartments having adequate security cover. The compartments are fully automatic with gates being operated automatically and there are emergency exits in the train. You can communicate with the driver of the train at any point in case of an emergency.

Metro Rail stations have been designed keeping in view the comfort of the passengers and the traffic on the road. Each and every station of Delhi Metro has sufficient parking space to provide hassle free commuting where people can park their vehicles and use the metro service. The stations have an international look in them and the immaculate facilities within the stations make you feel proud of the service offered by DMRC. The stations have special care for handicaps and senior citizens with escalators and lifts in place. The computerized ticketing system makes transit in and out of the metro very smooth. DMRC also gives the option of possessing travel card if you are a daily traveler and wish to avoid standing in queues for tokens.

Currently metro is operational in some parts of the city but in the coming years Delhi Metro will have operations all through the city with connectivity to Gurgaon and Noida. Metro has strongly aided the reduction in traffic rush to the Airport by creating a Airport metro line wherein the Air Passengers board the Special Metro trains a few Kilometres away from the airport along with their baggage and get off within the Airport.

It has won numerous environmentally friendly awards from many reputed organizations including the United Nations, RINA, and ISO. It was the first metro rail in the world to be ISO 14001 certified for its environmentally friendly construction.

Delhi Metro OSCAR Award

Delhi Metro won OSCAR award in 2008 in Paris for innovative concepts in service category. The â€˜Delhi Metro-Citibankâ€™ credit card was considered in the OSCAR for â€˜Innovation in Serviceâ€™ as the best amongst all other nominations.
